How to Carry Prawns Home or Across a City Without Losing Freshness

Buying fresh prawns from the market is only half the job. How you carry them home matters just as much. In a busy city, where a short shopping trip can turn into hours of traffic, even good-quality prawns can lose their freshness if they are not kept at the right temperature.

Whether you are bringing prawns home from your local fish market or carrying them across town after shopping, a few simple precautions can help preserve their quality and keep them safe to eat.

1. Keep Prawns Cold from the Start

Prawns are highly perishable seafood and need to be kept cold. If you have other errands to run, buy your prawns last so they spend less time outside refrigeration.

For a short journey, an insulated cooler bag with ice packs can help maintain a low temperature. If you are travelling for longer, use a well-insulated ice box with enough ice packs to keep the prawns properly chilled. Ideally, keep them at 4°C or below during transport.

Do not leave prawns in a shopping bag inside a warm car or on a sunny two-wheeler seat. Even a seemingly short delay can expose them to temperatures that encourage bacterial growth.

2. Pack Them Properly to Prevent Leaks

Fresh prawns can release liquid as they warm up, creating a mess and potentially contaminating other groceries. Place them in a clean, leak-proof container or sealed food-grade bag before putting them inside your cooler.

If you are using ice, make sure the prawns remain cold without sitting in contaminated meltwater. Keep raw seafood separate from cooked food, fruits and other ready-to-eat items. This reduces the risk of cross-contamination during the journey.

3. Plan Your Route and Travel Time

In a city, traffic is often the biggest challenge. Try to take the shortest practical route home and avoid making unnecessary stops after buying seafood.

If you know you have a long commute ahead, carry a cooler bag with frozen gel packs or properly prepared ice packs. An ordinary carry bag is not enough to protect prawns from the heat, particularly during the warmer months.

Remember that air conditioning in a car does not guarantee that seafood stored in the boot or a shopping bag will remain at a safe temperature.

4. Refrigerate or Freeze Prawns as Soon as You Arrive

Once you reach home, transfer the prawns to the refrigerator promptly. If you plan to cook them within a day or two, store them in the coldest part of the refrigerator, ideally at 4°C or below. For longer storage, freeze them at -18°C or below.

Avoid leaving prawns on the kitchen counter while you unpack groceries or prepare other ingredients. If raw prawns have been at room temperature for more than two hours, or more than one hour in temperatures above 32°C, it is safest to discard them.

5. Choose Quality Before You Begin the Journey

Safe transportation starts with buying good-quality prawns from a reliable source. Look for prawns that have been handled hygienically and kept properly chilled or frozen. Avoid seafood with an ammonia-like smell, unusual discolouration or a slimy texture.

For convenient meal planning, frozen prawns can be a practical choice. When properly processed, packaged and maintained at -18°C or below, they can retain their quality during storage. Carry them in an insulated bag and keep them frozen for as long as possible on the way home.

At Megaa Moda, seafood quality is supported by careful processing and freezing practices. Whichever prawns you choose, remember that good handling does not end at the shop counter.

The simple rule is this: keep prawns cold, pack them securely and minimise travel time. A little planning can make the journey from the market to your kitchen safer and help you enjoy seafood at its best.
